TWO TEACHER'S GUIDES
AND
ONE STUDENT EDITION
ABOUT THE TEACHER'S GUIDES
SMSC: Elements and Interactions
(Volume 2) is a teacher’s guide containing ALL Student Lessons and Teacher Notes related to the structure of atoms & molecules, elements, the periodic table, physical and chemical changes, and acids and bases.
BOTH TEACHER'S GUIDES INCLUDE:
• Teacher's Introduction to Synergized Middle School Chemistry,
•Extensive Teacher Notes for each lesson,
•Teacher's Literacy Resource Section, and
•Post-Assessments that are different from Student Edition.
The Teacher Introduction and Notes in SMSC Teacher's Editions: Volumes 1 and 2 are essential to the implementation of the lessons in the SMSC Student Edition. The Teacher Notes provide extensive information about the use and preparation of materials and chemicals as well as recommended teaching strategies, background information, and sample student responses for each lesson.
ABOUT THE STUDENT EDITION
The SMSC Student Edition contains ALL Student Lessons found in both Teacher's Guides (Volumes 1 and 2).
It does not contain the extensive teacher's notes found in the guides that describe lab materials and preparation, lesson strategies, provide sample student responses, or the content background for the teacher.
The SMSC Student Edition does contain practice post-assessments (with scoring keys) that are different from the post-assessments in the Teacher's Guides. The practice post-assessments are included in the Student Edition to help students review
key concepts and vocabulary before they perform the more formally scored assessments in the Teacher's Guides.
IN ADDITION the SMSC Student Edition contains:
•A Student
Introduction titled: What Should You Know
Before You Begin Your Study of Chemistry?
•An Appendix that includes the following
sections:
•Reading for Success: On-My-Own Guide
of Great Science Reading Strategies,
•Self-Evaluation
Tools,
•Check Your Work: Practice Post-Assessment Answers,
•Metric Measurement
Guide,
•Resources and References, and
•Periodic Table of the Elements.
What is Synergized Chemistry?
Synergized chemistry incorporates the best practices of science instruction: inquiry-based learning, literacy integration, and embedded assessment.
Synergized is a word you won't find in the dictionary. It is a word we created by melding the words "synergy" and "energy." Synergized lessons work together in a prescribed instructional sequence to teach core concepts more effectively than a series of unconnected lessons. The synergy comes from integrated lessons and meaningful interactions between teachers and students.
Why Synergized Chemistry?
Synergized Middle School Chemistry (SMSC) provides the middle school science educator with the curriculum to answer these questions and ease the demands of teaching. SMSC students actively participate in the learning process. Lessons are engaging, hands-on, and relevant. As students read, write, calculate, and communicate in the context of science, they not only deepen their conceptual understanding but also improve their literacy and math skills. Feedback for students is continuous and ongoing. To help save time and money, synergized investigations use "green materials" that are safe, economical and found in local supermarkets and discount stores.
